چکیده

Riedel (1960) recognized that after orthodontic treatment , the teeth tend to return to their original positions because the periodontal tissues have not had suf cient time to reorganize themselves. During this reorganization period , the teeth must be maintained in the position achieved orthodontically, by means of removable or  xed retention systems. When relapse is expected, a splint is often used on completion of orthodontic treatment to resist the dislocating forces acting on the teeth. These forces ( Littlewood et al. , 2006 ; Edman Tynelius et al., 2010 ) are mainly occlusal, those exerted by the masticatory muscles or tongue, and elastic rebound forces are exerted by the periodontal tissues. The resultant force is transmitted to the teeth and then to the splint, principally as  exural forces. Retention is consequently important and must continue until periodontal reorganization has been fully achieved. Stainless steel (SS) orthodontic sectional archwires are often used in the anterior lingual segment as  xed retention. These , however, have some drawbacks due to the excessive stiffness of the In vitro determination of the mechanical and chemical properties

In vitro debonding of orthodontic retainers analyzed with finite element analysis.

OBJECTIVE The aim of this in vitro study was to determine the load and deflection at failure of different lingual retainers bonded with composite to enamel in a standardized three-point bending test. The results were rationalized with finite element analysis (FEA) models. MATERIALS AND METHODS Four types of multistranded wires, Dead Soft Respond, Twisted ligature, Penta-One, Gold-plated Penta...

Glass fibre reinforced versus multistranded bonded orthodontic retainers: a 2 year prospective multi-centre study.

The objective of this study was to compare glass fibre reinforced (GFR) with multistranded bonded orthodontic retainers in terms of success rate and periodontal implications. A 2 year parallel study was conducted of 184 patients scheduled to receive bonded retainers in the upper and lower anterior segments. In three centres, the patients (mean age 14 years; 90 males and 94 females) were sequent...

Considerations in the Selection of Retainer Following an Orthodontic Treatment

Retention is the phase of orthodontic treatment which maintains the teeth in their orthodontically corrected position. The right choice of retainer selection is essential forthe reduction of relapse risk after orthodontic treatment. The Aim of the study was to establish the considerations of retainer selection for reducing the frequency of relapse following an orthodontic treatment.Materials an...

Bonded Orthodontic Retainer and Fixed Partial Denture Made with Fiber Reinforced Composite Resin

Retention is the phase of orthodontic treatment which maintains teeth in their orthodontically corrected positions, following the cessation of active orthodontic tooth movement. Development of resin-impregnated, fiber-reinforced composite materials has provided the potential to develop new approaches for stabilizing teeth and replacing teeth conservatively. This case report describes the rehabi...

Relapse during Retention with Hawley and Clear Overlay Retainers in Iraqi Adults

Maintaining the treatment results following orthodontic treatment is one of the most important aspects of the entire orthodontic treatment process. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate and compare the uses of Hawley and clear overlay orthodontic retainers relative to changes in overjet, overbite, intermolar width, intercanine width, and arch length measurements. These measurements w...
